Discord is a free VoIP ( Voice over IP) application/software platform made for building communities varying from gamers to educators and institutions. Discord concentrates on text, pictures, video, and audio communication among users in a channel. Discord is available on Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, and web browsers. As of today, there are over 250 million people using discord

Discord allows gamers an easy-to-use platform with exceptional functionality, that made Teamspeak and Ventrilo turning in their pits. The core team at Discord is excellent, and the app pumps out daily tp weekly updates for bug fixes and Software Updates.

Despite regular updates, one might face a Downloading Update issue while booting the Discord app. It is pretty usual facing the Downloading Update screen when you open the Discord app. However, for most users, the Downloading Update screen won’t go off.  Even if you let the software update for a couple of hours, the screen will stay the same. Force Stopping the app and restarting it will not fix this problem. Rebooting the entire system hasn’t fixed the problem for most users. Whenever you will start the Discord app, you’ll get stuck on this screen. This won’t have any impact on the web browser users though. Nearly all the users encountering this could use discord on their web browser without any issues. How to Force Update Your Discord 1

But Why?

The culprit behind this problem is Discord’s Updater. There is a bug in the update or the updater that creates this issue. This is why users using discord on their web browsers won’t face this issue because the web version runs on a dedicated server, Normally, this can be fixed by reinstalling discord via a fresh installer. Still, if that doesn’t resolve the problem then this means that there might be some problem with the app files or windows Registry or file. There might be some corrupted file just sitting in there and creating issues in updating the application. So, cleaning up all the files linked to the Discord app will, probably, fix the issue.

Despite the continuous development and updates, any application can still be tied back by bugs or glitches, which can annoy gamers to their peak. Whether your microphone isn’t working, you can’t hear others, or Discord’s app isn’t updating, it can be a pain in the ass that rages you before you even start playing a game.

But worry not, I myself faced such issues in the last few days and tried some stuff which really helped me fix this. So here are some tried and tested tricks to help you force update your Discord App!

1 . Wait, Wait, & Wait Some More!

Some Discord Update downloads are bulkier than others, and if your net connection is slow due to peak traffic or some other reasons, the Discord servers are overfilled or running slow for some other reasons, then the update might take longer to download than you’re habitual of. As they say, patience is a virtue. Give Discord some time to update on its own, go grab a coffee, enjoy some Netflix, etc.

If you finish waiting for longer than 30-45 minutes, then you can be sure the problem isn’t just a slow download.

2 . Disable Your Anti-Virus

Sometimes, Anti-Viruses software might be the reason because of which your Discord won’t update. Most antivirus systems use classifiers that may misclassify some files as dangerous threats and delete them. So if your Anti-Virus is the issue here, then try disabling your Anti-Virus Software and then update your discord.

Here’s how you Disable Your Anti Virus:

  • Go to the taskbar
  • On the bottom right corner, you’ll see your Anti-Virus Software’s Icon
  • Rightclick on the icon
  • Click on Quit Anti-Virus Software
  • Try Updating your Discord Software again.

3 . Disable Windows Defender

Windows Defender is an inbuilt Antivirus System which causes the same problems we discussed above. Here’s how you disable Windows Defender

  • In the Windows search bar, look for “Settings”
  • Go to Update & Security
  • Click on  Windows Security
  • Then Virus & Threat Protection
  • And Open  Manage Settings
  • Toggle the Turn on real-time protection off

Now Try installing Discord again!

4 . Disabling Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall is yet another program that can create issues with Updating Discord. It’s possible that the firewall on your system is blocking some function or process in the background. So it’s better to disable your Firewall and try Updating your App

To disable Windows Defender Firewall,

  • Look for Firewall in the Windows Search and Click on Firewall and Network Protection.
  • Open The Active Network connection.
  • Below Windows Defender Firewall, Click on the switch to disable Firewall.
  • Make sure to block all incoming connections, including those in the of authorized apps option, is disabled.

Now try updating your Discord app

5 . Update as Administrator

It is probable that Discord is unable to update because it requires administrator-level rights to execute its process. To fix this, you should update the application as an administrator.

Before you do this, make sure that there is no Discord process working in the background. Open Task Manager and check that no Discord-related process is running in the background. If you find any, kill them.

  1. Goto to the downloaded Discord update.
  2. Right-click the application and select Run as Administrator to start the update process. Overlook the warning message if one arises.

If everything else didn’t work for you and you still have the Discord App not updating problem then you should just reinstall the application.

You can download a new installer from https://discordapp.com/ and open it. If that doesn’t fix the issue, then I don’t know what will!
